Championing Local Businesses in York

Giving Independent Businesses an Online Presence

The City of York was badly hit by the devastating Boxing Day floods in 2015, an event which had a catastrophic impact on many small, local businesses. With concern for the future of traders in the City, York Business Improvement Development (BID) provided funding to York Independent Business Association (Indie York) for creation of a website. This website would be a key promotional platform, providing much needed visibility for individual businesses struggling to be seen. Where larger competitors had budget capacity to survive such a disaster, smaller businesses needed something that would help to put them on the map. The website would promote collective brands, giving residents and tourists coming to York the chance to see the many choices available.

Building an interactive website for Indie York

In 2016, I-Finity was successful in securing the contract to build the York Indie website. As a family-run business, with a base in York, there was an immediate connection to the cause for Owner Russ Huntington. The website needed to be user-friendly and future proofed to give Indie York the longevity needed to support local traders. With extensive experience of both cloud and device agnostic technology, I-Finity could provide a site that would be secure and reliable, with room for growth. Umbraco was chosen as the website platform for its user-friendly interface for easy content management. Indie York wanted to create a vibrant site that visitors would enjoy using, so the front-end development was just as important. The idea of taking of printed map and turning it into an interactive one meant that online and offline materials could work together as a cohesive campaign.  Building the map was a fantastic project for I-Finity but support was needed to make the map look great too. Keeping things local, a York-based illustrator was commissioned to add design touches which would reflect the quality of the website.  Crucially I-Finity built the site to be fully responsive meaning visitors would have the same optimised experience, regardless of the device and screen size being used.

Councillor Johnny Hayes MBE
“This has been a tremendously successful website with over 100 businesses directly involved and over 21,000 visits since its launch. The quality of this site was crucial to Indie York’s success and it is highly effective at directing people to the many businesses around York.” Councillor Johnny Hayes MBE

The website continues to drive daily visitors toward the businesses listed and is still proudly maintained and developed by I-Finity.
